As professionals, we often hear many valid concerns and questions concerning different countertop materials, mostly surrounding the pros and cons of granite vs. quartz countertops. We’re here to take a look at the benefits and possible draw backs to both so you can make an informed decision!
First, we should explore what each material is and what that means.
Granite is 100% natural stone, typically sourced in South America, India and Asian. As far as natural stone countertops goes, Granite is king.
Quartz is also made from natural stone, however is then engineered with resins and epoxys to increase it’s durability. While quartz used to be a high ticket item, the price has lowered over the years to be similar if not the same as granite.
Both granite and quartz, alongside quartzite, are some of the hardest materials you can put on your countertop. They are highly resilient to scratching and staining, though we don’t recommend you test it out. More often than not, your countertop is more likely to hurt your utensils, such as dulling knives if cut on, than the other way around!
Quartz and granite are equally heat resistant, typically it cakes around 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit to cause damage to these countertops!
While granite is still minimally porous, quarts is not at all. Granite does require proper sealing as needed and is susceptible to minimal staining when not protected or left unattended. Quartz, however, is semi impervious and does not require sealing or careful maintenance.
