1. What do you think homeowners ignore the most when it comes to tile and lighting design?

Samantha: To be honest, most homeowners ignore the idea of “personal touch”. They treat tiling and lighting as checkboxes to check, after completing the remodel but they’re actually some of the most expressive elements in a space. Lights don’t just light up the room, they also have the power to uplift your mood. Tiles, on the other hand, reflect your favorite hues and lighten you up when you walk into the room. So I always recommend my clients to pay close attention to these elements.

2. What does your remodeling process look like?

Samantha: It always begins with a conversation. Like I mentioned earlier, personal touch matters so I try to understand the homeowner’s personality. Do they love hosting dinner parties? Are they coffee lovers? What are their daily rituals? I take inspiration from their art collection and their favorite travel destinations. Once I get to know their personality, I begin building a narrative through materials to craft their story within their home.

Samantha: Do not plan in haste. Remember, good design is 90% planning and 10% execution. Look around, observe different interiors, invest in gathering samples, and try them out in your space. Also, pay attention to your lighting layout. I’ve seen amazing tilework get lost in shadows simply because the lighting wasn’t considered at the right time. Most importantly, do not shy away from statement pieces. Samantha: Oh, there are so many unforgettable projects! There’s this one project that stands out the most. I remodeled a kitchen for a couple who loved mid-century modern design. In this case study, we explore a recent remodel of a compact kitchen and bathroom where strategic choices in tile and countertops dramatically transformed the feel and usability of the space. The Challenge

Our client approached us with a significant design challenge: a 1960s residence, characterized by its compact and outdated interiors. The kitchen was narrow and constricted, offering poor light and limited counter space, while the guest bathroom was much more restrained, lacking stylistic presence and identity.

The Mission? To redefine both spaces in terms of enhancing visual appeal, functionality, all while retaining the existing footprint.

Step 1: Reimagining Surface Design.

In compact spaces, every design choice holds a great significance. They must be chosen with utter importance with both style and utility.

For the kitchen, we recommended the integration of high gloss ceramic tile backsplash in a vertical stack layout. This immediately amplified the sense of height, while channeling natural light across the room. To maintain aesthetics, a subtle tone-on-tone palette, ivory layered over white was installed that brought out intricate textures without overpowering the room.

For the countertops, we opted for white quartz with soft gray veining. For the guest bathroom, the client initially outlined bold tile applications across both floor and walls. We considered their design statement, however in a space this intimate, restraint often delivers more impact. We proposed large format porcelain tiles defined in a soft sand color. To amplify the room, fewer grout lines and a greater sense of floor continuity showcased a seamless appearance. Installation of a complementary vertical tile added perceived height, while a frameless glass enclosure maintained an open, airy flow.

The counter was a floating vanity with a white quartz top (echoing the kitchen), creating cohesion between the two spaces. The vanity’s design enhanced the illusion of openness and prevented the room from feeling compacted.
